Chapter Thirteen

I was up and showered the next morning while Teri was still asleep on my couch. I was confused as hell but felt happier than I had in a very long time. I brewed a pot of coffee and Teri finally woke up from the aroma wafting through my apartment.

She held onto her head while she sat up, then she brushed her hair away from her face and rubbed her eyes.

I watched her with a big grin on my face and said, “good morning.”

She looked at me in confusion, then in shock, with full awareness of the prior evening.

“Oh my God, Jo. I’m so sorry. Did I do anything to embarrass you in front of your friends?”

“Not at all. In fact, they really liked you.”

“Then what are smiling at?”

“I just never saw you get that drunk before.”

“I like your friends too. Especially, Cam.”

I went to the kitchen and poured two cups of coffee.

“Yeah, Cam’s something, but don’t let her tough exterior fool you. She’s a big softy at heart. She’s also a true and loyal friend.”

I returned and handed her a cup and two Advil.

“Thanks,” she said and took a sip of coffee, then she smacked her hand over her mouth, ready to vomit.

I pointed in the direction of my bathroom and she sprinted in and closed the door. I finished my coffee and heated hers in the microwave.

When she finally emerged from the bathroom, she said. “I used your toothbrush.”

I gave her a repelled look and said, “It’s yours now.”

She sat down on the couch next to me, then washed the Advil down with the coffee.”

“Feel better?” I asked her.

She nodded.

I turned sideways on the couch to face her, with one leg bent up and said, “What’s going on, Teri? I haven’t seen you in over five years and you just show up out of nowhere. To be perfectly honest, I thought you would never want to see me again after what a shit I’ve been.”

She was staring into her coffee, shaking her head.

“I did want to see you. I wanted to call you so many times.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“When you went away that summer, you were so upset and angry. I thought you hated me.”

I took her hand and kissed her palm, then said, “I could never hate you, Teri.”

She began to cry and I asked her, “hey, what is it? I know something is wrong.”

“I think Bobby is cheating on me.”

The words hung in the air for a moment, then an ensemble of emotions went through me. I was angry at Bobby and my heart ached for, Teri, but I was selfishly elated that this may end their marriage.

I didn’t say anything for long time and Teri pleaded, “Jo, say something. You never, ever talked to me about Bobby. I know it really hurt you. It hurt me too, to see you in such pain, I wasn’t even sure if it was worth losing you over.”

“But you married him anyway,” I said.

“Yes. I thought I loved him.”

“What do mean, you thought you loved him?”

“I just don’t know if I do anymore.
